Cylindropuntia is native to the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico. Its name simply means cylindrical “opuntia” meaning stems. Formerly, this genus was known to be a subgenus of “Opuntia”. Cylindropuntia became a separate genus due to its cylindrical stems.
