Choosing Containers For Air Plants

containers for air plants featured image

Air plants known as Tillandsia are becoming increasingly popular as houseplants due to their unique look and ease of care. One of the benefits of air plants is that they do not require soil to grow, which means they can be displayed in various containers. Here are some things to consider when choosing containers for your air plants and some examples that work well.

What Factors To Look For When Choosing Containers For Air Plants

1. Size and Shape

When choosing a container for your air plant, consider the size and shape of the plant. Air plants come in various sizes, ranging from a few inches in height to over a foot tall. You want to make sure the container you choose is proportional to the size of the plant. Additionally, air plants can have different shapes, such as a rosette or a more elongated shape. Be sure to choose a container that complements the shape of the plant.

2. Material

Another factor to consider when choosing a container is the material. Air plants need good air circulation, so avoid containers that do not allow proper ventilation. Good options include containers made of glass, wire, or mesh. These materials provide good air circulation while allowing you to display your air plants stylishly.

One important note: Copper is toxic to air plants, so don’t use anything containing this substance.

3. The Surrounding Space

Air plants, or Tillandsia, are highly influenced by their surroundings. They thrive in bright, indirect light, as direct sunlight can be too intense. Ideal temperatures lie between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit, mimicking their native warm climates. High humidity levels are beneficial since these plants absorb moisture and nutrients directly from the air. Still, they also require good air circulation to prevent diseases and help them dry out after watering.

While named “air plants,” they need water, typically provided through misting or soaking, depending on their environment’s humidity and temperature. Additionally, they are sensitive to chemicals, such as chlorine, found in tap water, which may require using filtered or rainwater for care.

Some Ideas For Air Plant Containers

Here are some examples of containers that work well for air plants:

#1. Glass terrariums

Glass terrariums are a neat way to show off air plants. They let you see the plant from all angles and help keep the air around it moist, which air plants like. You can get creative with different shapes and sizes of terrariums, and they can be hung up or placed on a table.

The glass can also keep bugs and drafts away from the plant. But be careful not to overwater your plant in a terrarium, as the water doesn’t drain away. And, don’t put the terrarium in direct sun, as it can get too hot inside.

#2. Wire baskets

Wire baskets are great for air plants. They let plenty of air and light reach the plant, which helps it grow. Because they’re open, water can drain out quickly, stopping the plant from rotting. Wire baskets can fit any style in many shapes and sizes. They can be hung up or put on a table. Plus, taking the plant out of the basket is easy when watering it. Ensure the plant gets enough water and isn’t in too bright light.

#3. Seashells/ Sea Urchin Shells

Big seashells can be used as unique pots for air plants. They have good airflow and can give your room a beachy feel. Sea urchin shells are also suitable for holding air plants. Clean the shell, then put the bottom of the air plant inside. You can use safe glue to help keep the plant in place. Water the plant often by misting or soaking it. Make sure to dry it upside down so it doesn’t rot. This setup can make your home feel more like the ocean.
